Mental Performance Model (MPM)
Built on three evidence-based pillars: psychological flexibility, social connection and neurological efficiency. One integrated framework, designed to be tested, not just asserted.
What is the MPM Framework?
The Mental Performance Model represents a paradigm shift in how we approach athlete development. Rather than treating mental, social, and neurological factors as separate domains, MPM recognises their deep interconnection and uses this integration to produce measurable results.
Developed by Aaron Williams (AHPRA PSY0002297677), this framework draws on Acceptance and Commitment Training (ACT), contemporary neuroscience, and social psychology to create a practical system that athletes and performers can apply immediately.
The model addresses a critical gap in traditional sports psychology: the tendency to focus on symptoms rather than building genuine psychological flexibility and sustainable mental skills.
Mental Fitness Pillar (MFP)
Build the foundation of mental toughness through psychological flexibility—the ability to be present, open, and engaged with what matters most, even under pressure.
- Master the ACT Matrix for in-moment awareness
- Develop values-driven decision making
- Build defusion skills for unhelpful thoughts
- Cultivate acceptance of difficult emotions
- Create committed action patterns
Social Fitness Pillar (SFP)
Use social connection deliberately. Research shows athletes and performers with strong social support systems perform better under pressure and recover faster from setbacks.
- Build genuine team cohesion
- Develop effective communication patterns
- Handle conflict constructively
- Create psychological safety in teams
- Use social support to build resilience
Neuro Fitness Pillar (NFP)
Understand and optimise your nervous system for peak performance. Learn how to regulate arousal, enter flow states, and build neural pathways that support excellence.
- Master arousal regulation techniques
- Understand the neuroscience of flow
- Optimise sleep for performance
- Build attentional control
- Develop pre-performance routines
Evidence-Based Foundations
Each pillar is built on peer-reviewed research. The three-pillar integration is our own model, stated as testable predictions awaiting formal trials.
